Car Service Types - What Do They Include?

Every vehicle has to be maintained to keep it in perfect working order. To do this, regular services are essential. While there are key points when your vehicle will benefit from a full, top-to-bottom major service, the interim services are just as important. So how do you know which service you need, and what do they include?

Major services

The one service that no vehicle should miss is the major service. These are usually scheduled at 40,000km, 80,000km, and 100000km. These are comprehensive examinations of almost every aspect of your vehicle, to ensure that it is operating smoothly and is in a roadworthy condition. Safety features are also fully checked. As well as all the checkpoints carried out in a minor service, a major service will include:

• A complete engine check to look for any signs of wear or potential failure points
• An electrical and diagnostic inspection to make sure all of your lights, ignition, and electrical components are in good working order
• Replacing consumables such as spark plugs and filters
• Checking the transmission
• Replacing worn tires, and examining the wheels for any damage, cracks, or warping, as well as making sure they are correctly balanced.

Minor and interim services

Usually carried out at 10,000km and 20,000km respectively, minor and interim services are also carried out between your major services (again, at 10,000 and 20,000km points) to keep on top of general maintenance. These minor and interim services are also useful to spot and catch potential problems earlier so that they do not turn into major repairs or serious faults that could put you and your passengers at risk. A minor service will include:

• Changing the engine oil and filter to remove the old oil and keep the engine well lubricated and running smoothly
• Checking both engine and cabin air filters and fuel filters to ensure they are not blocked and replacing as necessary
• Inspecting the tyres to make sure they are within legal limits and are not worn, damaged, and inflated to the correct pressure
• Testing the battery to ensure it holds a charge correctly and that it is powering the ignition, lights and electrical system properly
• A general overall inspection of hoses, fluid levels, brakes and belts.

Additional services

A special chemical is added to your engine oil and the vehicle is then run. This chemical dislodges dirt and build-up from the internal workings of the engine. The oil, chemical, and dirt particulates are then ‘flushed’ through by draining the oil and fresh oil is added. The engine flush is available from Al-Futtaim Lexus at an additional cost. We recommend that it is carried out during a major service.
